Company Values: Beyond Homemade is a local business with a passion for crafting whole-grain baked goods.  They go “beyond” homemade by making their baked goods in small batches using freshly ground wheat berries.  It is also their passion to educate others about the health benefit of the whole grain.  They believe that their customers should not have to sacrifice flavor for nutrition.  Their goal is to create a unique line of products that are not only healthy but delicious too.

About their self-produced flour:  The wheat berry is one of the richest sources of vitamin E and contains 40 of the 44 known essential vitamins and nutrients that our bodies need.  Once the wheat berry is cracked through the milling process, the vitamins and minerals start to oxidize.  Within 3 days they are gone.  Commercially milled flours cannot provide these same benefits, because they have to remove the wheat germ and oil to prolong shelf life.  These key parts of the wheat berry are where most of the nutrition is found.  By milling just what they need for a particular recipe, they are guaranteeing the full benefit of those vitamins and nutrients are locked into the baked goods they sell.  Using the flour they produce, they create a variety of baked goods that go beyond the traditional.

In addition to grinding their own wheat, another unique aspect of their line of products is that they use no white sugar in the majority of their baked goods.  Using natural sugars like honey, sucanat, honey granules and natural cane sugars, allows their baked goods to maintain the full flavor and nutrients of these natural/less refined sugars.  They also use free range eggs that are locally sourced from Sinking Creek Family Farm, local in season fruit and produce, usually found at the market, to create new and unique baked goods.

About the Market:  Beyond Homemade has been a part of the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market since May of 2011. The owner, Ronda Moore, expresses how much she enjoys being part of such a great tradition.  “I love the rhythm of the market, the personal interactions and the positive feedback that I receive about my work.  Seeing familiar faces, family and friend interactions and the ever-changing activity of the market brings a type of satisfaction that is hard to find anywhere else.”

Popular products at the Market include:  sweet tortillas, savory and sweet loaf breads, granolas & trail mixes, freshly rolled oats, almond butter, different flavors of sweetened cream cheese, flavored hummus, and various collegiate themed items containing cranberries and apricots.  One new addition is freshly brewed Mattie’s Mountain Mud coffee that is locally roasted, certified organic, fair-trade certified and Virginia’s finest.
