Glade Road Growing is a small farm located on Glade Road across from the Heritage Park in Blacksburg, Virginia. Jason and Sally specialize in annual vegetables but also have about seven colonies of honeybees and just planted a small apple orchard with 15 varieties of apples. Their farming methods are based on building and maintaining the health of the soil. They do their best to serve as caretakers of the land by using organic matter-based mulches and cover crops. Although their intensive cultivation area only occupies about 4 acres, they also manage the remaining 44 acres on the property, part in rotational pasture for a local beef cattle farmer and part in a native-species forest and riparian area for a tributary of Tom’s Creek.
“We think that we have some great produce, and we have our soil to thank for it (plus a lot of sweat that went into mulching it with leaves and woodchips). We use organic-matter based mulches rather than plastics, practice crop rotation, and plant several perennial flower borders to serve as a habitat for insects that prey on crop pests. All of our fertilizers and pesticides are organically certified and are available from Seven Springs Farm in Floyd, Virginia.”
