Sharon Morley and George Hall cultivate nine and a half acres of their 200-acre farm located on the eastern side of Pilot Mountain. Tomatoes and peppers are their largest and most diverse crop, yielding 12 varieties of heirloom tomatoes and several kinds of peppers. They grow lots of shell beans and snap beans; one favorite is pink speckled October beans. The summer harvest yields cucumbers, and white, yellow and bi-color corn, as well as cantaloupe and watermelon. In fall seven varieties of potatoes, as well as several kinds of squash including pumpkins are harvested. They also grow a medley of fruit. For 25 years they have sold at local farmers markets. Sharon loves the market camaraderie and festive atmosphere. She also says, “farming is the perfect lifestyle, staying active and healthy.  You are your own boss and you are doing something you really care about. You are producing a healthy product. You feel good about it. No day is ever the same.”

In addition to selling at the farmers market, George and Sharon sell Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands harvested from their 165-acre farm in Craig County. Sharon’s work also includes planting tree seedlings for landowners in the spring. She says, “My legacy to Virginia will be that I have personally planted more than a million trees.”
