Randy Cohen and Lynn Chipkin relocated from New York and established Indian Valley Farms on 40 acres of Floyd County farmland and woods in 1991. They began selling at the Blacksburg Farmers Market that same year. What began as growing a few vegetables in their backyard has transformed to cultivating an assortment of produce in large fields on their farm.
Randy and Lynn’s harvest typically includes tomatoes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant, gourds, fennel, lettuce, onions, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, winter and summer squash, tomatoes, watermelon, basil, chard, beets, spinach and strawberries. Lynn’s handmade wreaths and Randy’s kudzu baskets are other popular items that can be found at their Market stand.
Farming takes a lot of Randy’s time, yet when not out in the fields, he can be found sorting out numbers as a certified public accountant. Randy says, “I enjoy spending time at the market. The other vendors always seem to have interesting varieties of vegetables for sale and are always happy to discuss their growing methods. It is most satisfying when a customer says how much they enjoyed what they purchased at the previous market day from us.”
