Tracie Harrah is the creative force and visionary behind Under the Green Umbrella, where tradition meets innovation in every handcrafted product she brings to market. A lifelong food artisan, Tracie is a seasoned entrepreneur, marketing specialist, and professional recipe developer with over two decades of experience creating original, nutrient-rich, gut-healing recipes from scratch.
Guided by a deep understanding of nutrition science and a strong ancestral lineage of Appalachian foodways, Tracie blends modern wellness with old-world methods—fermentation, foraging, preserving, and slow crafting. She is a formally educated nutritionist with a Master’s in Nutrition Science from Logan University, where she specialized in the gut microbiome and digestive health. Her work reflects not just professional expertise but generations of inherited knowledge, transforming farm-grown ingredients into vibrant, healing foods that nourish both body and soul.
Tracie’s journey began in her 20s as the only baker among seasoned farmers at the Blacksburg Farmers Market, where she dreamed of one day raising her own family in that same environment of grit, wisdom, and connection to real food. That dream became reality—her children now reflect the same strength and love for the land that shaped her path. As the market’s longest-standing vendor, Tracie continues to transform surplus farm produce into cherished community staples. For her, the true reward lies not in profit, but in nourishing others, preserving stories, and honoring the legacy of those who came before her
Over the years, Tracie has mentored dozens of college students who’ve worked beside her, learning the art and science of recipe creation, sustainable food production, and purpose-driven entrepreneurship. Her kitchen and urban farm have become a hands-on classroom where young adults grow not only their skills, but their understanding of integrity, community, and grit. Many of her mentees have gone on to thrive in careers across food systems, nutrition, and sustainability, forever impacted by her commitment to nurturing both people and the planet.
As a certified Virginia Master Gardener, Tracie brings deep expertise in sustainable agriculture and regenerative growing practices. She grows much of what she uses, from heirloom herbs and sweet fruit to seasonal produce, grounding her recipes in the rhythms of the land. Her farm-to-table approach is both intuitive and intentional, with each product shaped by what’s in season, what’s healing, and what honors the earth. This living connection to the soil infuses every creation with freshness, depth, and a reverence for the full cycle of food.
For Tracie, Under the Green Umbrella is more than a business—it’s a lifelong story of family, community, and enduring purpose. It’s a place where food, love, and legacy come together, one handcrafted creation at a time.
