Rooted in the Land: Weathertop Farm
Founded in 2003, Weathertop Farm has roots—literally. Cedric Shannon, Weathertop’s owner, is serious about soil, pastured land, and the animals that make it all possible.
“Raising animals on the land is the only way we’re going to save the soil.”
Cedric, his wife, and a small staff operate on the farm’s 200 acres, split across 140 acres of pasture and 60 acres of “silvopasture”: a system that integrates trees and forage into the land.
Weathertop raises a diverse array of livestock: laying hens, broiler chickens, sheep, cattle, and pigs. Everyday, Cedric and the staff embark on a complex rotation system across the farm. Some animals are moved daily; others more sporadically, all in the name of being good stewards to the land and the pasture that they farm.
They don’t spray, ever. As far as inputs go, Weathertop does their best to seriously limit what needs to come onto the farm in order to make the operation successful. The animals, truly, do most of the heavy lifting to keep the pasture growing well and the soil healthy.
People come around to local meat in many ways, Shannon says. Many people simply taste it for the first time at a friend’s house or local restaurant and are hooked by the amazing taste. Others come looking for ethically-produced meat, something everyone at Weathertop is always to discuss.
Weathertop Farm’s products are available at our market as well as several other markets and farmstands in the area. As with all our producers, they have a strong sense of collaboration and togetherness that brings our communities together.
Whether you’re looking to try local meats for the first time or need to stock your freezer with a variety of amazing products, find Cedric and the crew at the market and see all that they have on offer!
